The polo shirt was first designed in 1933 by French tennis player René Lacoste, who also made his nickname “crocodile” a trademark at the same time by sewing a small dark green crocodile on each shirt on the left side of the chest. When designing his shirts, the Frenchman used cotton pique, an airy, cotton-like fabric, which is characterized in particular by alternately raised and recessed areas and thus appears as quilted (piqué).
